Professor at the Dept. of Medieval Studies, CEU, Budapest. Fellow at the IEA-Paris in 2011/12 with a project on “Stigmata – from Saint Francis to Padre Pio.” Born in 1950, graduated in history in 1974 at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest, where he returned to teach in 1984 and in 1994-97 he was Head of the Department of Medieval European History. In 1992 he founded the Dept. of Medieval Studies at CEU which he directed between 1991-97 and 2005-2007. In 1997-2002 and 2008 he served as Rector of Collegium Budapest – Institute for Advanced Study, and he remained there Permanent Fellow until 2011. Principal academic interests: historical anthropology of popular religion (sainthood, miracle beliefs, healing, magic, witchcraft). Medieval and modern visions and their bodily manifestations. Comparative cultural and religious history of Hungary and Central Europe in an all-European context.
Principal responsibilities in the project:
Besides coordinating the collective work I will be editing two bilingual volumes of medieval Central European legends at the CEU Press, and coedit a bilingual version of the oldest legend and the canonization process of Saint Margaret of Hungary. In addition I will pursue my researches on various aspects of dynastic sainthood in Hungary as an expression of regional and national identity.
