The starting point of the lecture is the decree of the Council of Trent about sainthood and the veneration of saints: it will focus on contemporary theological reflections concerning the problems involved; it will shortly analyze a polemic about the cult of saints at the end of the 16th century between the Catholic András Monoszlói and the Protestant Miklós Gyarmathi; and, finally, it will examine some interesting textual examples (mostly sermons from the 17–18th centuries) regarding the transformations of medieval cults as well as the appearance of new directions in the veneration of saints.
Csilla Gábor is Professor of Hungarian literature at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj, where she teaches old Hungarian literature, devotional and homiletic literature, and the history of rhetoric.
